Franklin Christmas Parade is this Sunday
A wonderful tradition falling on the Sunday after Thanksgiving is the procession of Franklin’s Annual Christmas Parade. This year’s parade is sure to delight all of those who attend. The parade is scheduled for Sunday, November 29 beginning at 3pm.
We are excited to announce that this year’s Grand Marshall will be Alice Bradley. We are pleased to honor Alice “Ab”, a Macon County bus driver, for preventing a shooting attack on children and staff at South Macon Elementary School on the morning of June 4, 2015. If not for her quick thinking and actions, lives could have been taken that day.
“The Music of Christmas” has been chosen as the theme for the parade. “This year’s theme provides for a broad range of ideas to be incorporated in float design and other entries. We encourage those participating to decorate their float featuring the “music” theme and welcome the playing of music as well” said Cindy Cavender, Special Events Coordinator. Prize money will be awarded. Judging of the floats will begin promptly at 2pm. Prizes for Best Use of Theme, Most Creative & Grand Champion will be awarded.
The parade will follow the same route as last year, lining up along Church Street beside First Baptist Church. The parade route will begin by pulling out on the top of Town Hill beside Town Hall. The route will proceed down Main Street turning left at the Lazy Hiker Brewing Company onto Porter Street. Then turn left onto Palmer Street and continue to the Highlands Road Intersection. Each entry can choose their own location to disband.
“Folks need to keep in mind when designing their entries that the “Santa” rule applies again this year,” Cavender continued. “No Santas are allowed on any float OTHER THAN the traditional Santa float, which signifies the end of the parade.”
Due to safety concerns, ATVs and motorcycles are not allowed in the parade. In order to ensure the safety of children NO candy will be thrown from any moving vehicle. Candy may be handed out by folks walking beside their entries away from the moving vehicles. The Parade Committee reserves the right to remove any entry it deems inappropriate or unsafe.
We are excited to work with Dave Linn and feature a new event at this year’s parade…
Franklin, N.C.’s Ugly Holiday Sweater Dash for all ages. This is a benefit for Macon County Care Network and will be hosted before the start of the annual Franklin Christmas Parade. The Dash starts at 2:45pm and registration begins at 2:00pm in the parking lot of Franklin Town Hall.
Entry fee for the dash is 5 canned goods per “Dasher”. Finishers of “Franklin, N.C.’s Ugly Holiday Sweater Dash” will receive a completion certificate. Our goal is to break a Guinness World Records of the most ugly holiday sweaters in a dash/race. Pets are invited to take part of the dash but must be on leashes at ALL time. Pet owners are encouraged to dress up their pets in an ugly sweater.
Franklin, N.C.’s Ugly Holiday Sweater Dash route is from the crosswalk in front of Town Hall to the parking lot entrance of Motor Company Grill. DO NOT HAVE A SWEATER? NO PROBLEM! Get creative and start creating the perfect Ugly Holiday Sweater. So, start looking in Grandma’s closet and starting thinking about the perfect Ugly Holiday Sweater. Let’s put Franklin on the map and in the books (Guinness World Records).
