Two Prescribed Burns Thursday on Nantahala Ranger District

The Nantahala Ranger District is planning to conduct  two prescribed burns today, April 12.

The Wolf Knob burn is 570 acres in the Alarka area of Swain County. Smoke may be visible near Sylva, Franklin and Bryson City.

The Bullpen burn is 722 acres east of Highlands. The Chattooga River trail (TR 432) and connector trail (TR 433) will be temporarily closed during the burn and are expected to reopen this afternoon. Smoke may be visible near Highlands and Cashiers.

The public should be aware of the potential for smoke in the area along with firefighter traffic, including a helicopter. Safety for our firefighters and communities is our top priority when burning.

Objectives of these burns include hazardous fuel reduction and wildlife habitat improvement.
